I hung up on him. The name of the game in Chicago is defense making Benson a control freak.

Troy Williamson, WR, Minnesota Vikings- I saw this fly boy with my own weakening eyes last year and he made a couple of plays that opened my mouth wider than it already is. Last year was a learning experience on many levels for this whippersnapper after playing in an offense in college that passed the ball as often as Sinatra slept alone. The game spread to the other states of Australia but never had the profile that it had in Victoria. Elite players from interstate came to Victoria to pit their ability against the best in the nation.
Interstate carnivals began in the 1950`s but it soon became evident that Victoria was clearly dominant sometimes winning games by extraordinary amounts.

By the 1970`s this format was changed to allow players to represent the State they
initially came from. This allowed all the elite players from other states that were playing V.F.L to "Go Home" and represent their own State.
This had a dramatic effect on the Interstate competition and bought renewed interest from the other States.

The governing body of football decided to relocate one of the V.F.L teams to
Sydney in New South Wales.Hence the South Melbourne Football Club moved
north in 1982.By the late 80`s the V.F.L could see the interest level soaring
from other States and put the wheels in motion to include teams from Interstate,namely:
West Coast Eagles in Western Australia
Adelaide Crows in South Australia
Brisbane Bears(later Lions) in Queensland.
( Port Adelaide S.A and Fremantle W.A were later inculsions)

By 2000 the game had gone truly national with a 16 team competition from 5 States.
With West Coast winning 2 premierships (`92 & `94 ) and Adelaide winning 2 (`97,`98) the revered Premiership Cup had left the borders of Victoria for the first time since 1897.

The V.F.L had changed its name to the A.F.L Australian Football League and everyone grasped the concept except maybe for die hard tradtional Victorians.

Of the past 7 Grand Finals played,including 2006 last week, 6 have been won by what Victorians call "Interstate Clubs".The last 3 being contested by non Victorian clubs.

Our game has changed,of that there is no doubt. And for the better too.
Just don`t tell too many Victorians that.

For those of you who want to learn football and join this craze called the NFL (National Football League), this is for you. Here are some football basics to get you started:

o An NFL team has 53 players; some play on Offense (unit that possession of the ball and is trying to score); some play on Defense (unit that attempts to stop its opponent's Offense from scoring) and some play on Special Teams (units that are on the field for kickoffs, punts and field goals)

o At any given time, a team has 11 players on the field

o The Offense attempts to advance the ball past its opponent's goal line and score touchdowns (worth 6 points) or move it into field goal range for its Kicker to attempt a field goal (worth 3 points)

o There are two type of plays - passing and rushing (running)

o An Offense has four plays (downs) to advance the ball at least 10 yards; if it does so, it maintain possession of the ball; if it doesn't, it may have to give up possession to its opponent

o The amount of time a team has possession of the ball throughout the game is called its "Time of possession"; the longer, the better. This is critical, because if you don't have the ball, you can't score!

o When a team loses possession of the ball to its opponent, through an interception (throwing a forward pass that an opponent catches) or fumble (when the ball carrier loses possession), it commits a "turnover". Turnovers can be the difference between winning and losing. Each time a team commits a turnover, it gives itself one less and its opponent one more opportunity to score

o Finally, when someone asks you the score of the game, remember to always say the name of the team that is winning or that has won first. For example, if the Bears are leading the Lions 14 - 10, say something like "The Bears are up fourteen to ten", NOT "The Bears are winning ten to fourteen". If the score is 10 - 0, say "It's ten oh, Bears." Notice the use of the word "oh"? If its 17 - 17, say "It's seventeen all." Notice the use of the word "all"? Get the idea?

College Football - If You Thought SEC Was the Toughest NCAA Conference, Think Again

There is so much buzz and hype about the Southeast Conference—better known as the SEC—you would think there are no other NCAA football conferences that can compare.

Even Jeff Sagarin in his Sagarin Ratings lists the SEC as the top conference with a central mean (that is Sagarin math talk) of 79.89 with the Pacific 10—better known as the Pac 10—second at 79.19. On a scale of 100 the difference is 70/100ths of 1, or close enough to not make a difference in my mind.

Ranked 11th among Division 1A conferences is Conference USA at 58.88. Three 1AA conferences are then rated above the last 1A conference—the Sun Belt—at 58.26.

Sagarin rates all of the 242 individual 1A and 1AA teams and then combines them among conferences to arrive at these figures.

I read other factors into his mathematical formula for deciding which conference is the toughest (best) conference.

Knowing that the SEC is legion for scheduling Division 1AA teams in its non-conference schedule, I suspect that the SEC's strength of schedule (the quality of its opponents) may not be as strong. Turns out that I am right.

The "tough" SEC played exactly 10 Division 1AA opponents this season, more than any other conference in the country. By comparison, the Big 12 played 10, the ACC and Big Ten played 7 games, the Big East 6, and the Pac 10 only 2.

When I add up the strength of schedule for the 12 SEC teams I get an average of 30 compared to an average strength of schedule of 14 for the Pac 10. Who plays the tougher schedule between the top two dogs? It is easily the Pac 10.

If you are wondering, the team that has played the toughest schedule during the first 12 weeks of the 2007 college football season is the Washington Huskies, and that is why they are ranked No. 1 among the 242 Division 1A and 1AA schools.

For the record, Nebraska is No. 2, Stanford No. 3, California No. 4 and Colorado No. 5, so 3 of Top 5 teams in strength of schedule are from the Pac 10.

Please, do not give me this garbage about the SEC playing the toughest schedule. The facts and statistics say otherwise.

Another interesting fact of note is this: Since the NCAA established the Division 1A and 1AA separation in 1978, only 5 Division 1A schools have not played a Division 1AA school: Washington, Southern California, UCLA, Michigan State and Notre Dame. Again 3 of the 5 teams come from the Pac 10.

The SEC already has 7 of its 12 teams with 7 or more wins and bowl eligible by NCCA standards, and now you know one of the reasons why.

It is the same reason why Hawaii is unbeaten at 10-0, having defeated two 1AA schools in fattening up its impressive win record while racking up the 153rd toughest schedule against the other 119 Division 1A schools.

Sometimes a 1AA school can beat a 1A school (like Appalachian State beating Michigan at home 34-32), not because they are necessarily better but because the 1A school did not take them seriously.

A Brief History of American Football

American Football was derived from early versions of soccer and rugby football, both of which originated from the United Kingdom, mid-1800s. Both soccer and rugby, and thus American football, have the objective of kicking the ball to a goal or over a line. Similar to soccer, American football also involves twenty-two players on the field. American football terms such as "fullback" and halfback," which refer to positions, were also derived from the soccer sport. American football resulted from a major divergence from the rules of rugby football, as instituted by Walter Camp, considered to be the "Father of American Football."

The Father of American Football

Walter Camp instituted the rules of American football in 1879. Born April 17, 1859 in New Haven, Connecticut, Walter Camp studied medicine and business in Yale from 1976 to 1882. He was a man of many talents, being an author, director of the Pecks Brother Company, and chairman of the board for the New Haven Clock Company. He was also the head advisory football coach and general athletic director at Yale from 1888 to 1914, as well as chairman of the Yale football committee. He had a major role in the evolution of American Football from the game of Soccer and Rugby, as we know the sport today. Chief to Walter Camp's influence in changing the rules of the game was William Ebb Ellis, a student in an English Rugby School who was the first person known for picking up the soccer ball during a game and running with it towards the goal. It was in the Massosoit Convention in 1876 when the first attempt of establishing the rules for American football was made. Walter Camp edited the American Football rulebook until his last days in 1925.

Newly Established Rules

The important changes that were made by Walter Camp to establish American Football as a sport include the down-and-distance and line of scrimmage rules. He also standardized the scoring system using a numerical scoring and created the interference, safety, penalties, and neutral zone. He also established the rule that one side had undisputed possession of the ball until the ball is given up due to the said team's violations. He also created the center and quarter-back positions, the forward pass, and the eleven on a team instead of fifteen. By the late 19th and early 20th centuries, further developments to the rules of American Football were made by college coaches such as Knute Rockne, Amos Alonzo Stagg, Eddie Cochems, and Glenn "Pop" Warner.

Going Pro

By the first half of the 20th century, college football became more popular than rugby football and soccer. Bowl games, an inter-collegiate competition attracted a national audience, bolstering fierce rivalries among college football teams. The American Professional Football Association was soon formed in 1920 and two years later was changed to the National Football League (NFL), which became the major league of American Football. Today, there are numerous Pro American Football teams representing different states such as the Denver Broncos, Detroit Lions, Green Bay Packers, and New York Giants.

Are you a "CRAZY" Football Fan?

According to my wife I am a conspiracy theorist when it comes to college football rules and regulations; I always think that "everyone is out to get my team" and the college football system is crooked. Just last week my wife asked me if I thought the players in the huddle were talking about me as well, which was a little over the top, just a little though. Granted, I am an SEC fan, and we do tend to feel that we are disrespected by everyone on the face of the planet, except other SEC fans, but that's not what this article is about.

I wrote this article with hopes of finding other football fans out there that share the same frustrations that I feel during the college football season; hopefully proving to my wife that I'm not the only "crazy" football fan out there. According to my wife, if you exhibit any of these qualities you are a "crazy" football fan. With my apologies to Jeff Foxworthy, here they are:

1) If you still hate the new 40 second clock even though it makes perfect sense on paper … you may be a "CRAZY" football fan.

2) If you are tired of Ohio State, Notre Dame and USC dominating every sports show and being considered for a BCS bowl game regardless of their talent level and weak schedule … you may be a "CRAZY" football fan.

3) If you would like the sports announcers who are calling the game to SHUT UP every once in a while so you can enjoy the game … you may be a "CRAZY" football fan.

4) If you feel that the announcers who are calling the game are biased against your team and secretly hope they lose … you may be a "CRAZY" football fan.

5) If you want the announcers to stop broadcasting strategies on what your teams opponent needs to do to win the game because they may be listening … you may be a "CRAZY" football fan.

6) When the TV coverage switches to the young lady on the field, who is pretending to know what she is talking about while reading a teleprompter, and it causes you to throw the remote because you missed part of the next play … you may be a "CRAZY" football fan.

7) If you're sick and tired of hearing about how [insert team name here] from Conference USA, who is unbeaten, should contend for a BCS bowl even though their schedule consisted of JUCO teams and 13th graders … you may be a "CRAZY" football fan.

8) If you are tired of the constant debate on which conference is the "toughest" because it's painfully obvious that it's your team's conference … you may be a "CRAZY" football fan.

9) If your wife always seems to pack up the kids and go shopping around the time your team is playing … you may be a "CRAZY" football fan.

10) If it's a "bad idea" for you to watch the football games while the in-laws are over at Thanksgiving … you may be a "CRAZY" football fan.

11) If you dislike a person, whom you have never met, because you saw him wearing another team's cap … you may be a "CRAZY" football fan.

12) If your dog instantaneously yelps and runs out of the room when the TV is turned to a football game... you may be a "CRAZY" football fan.

Freestyle Football, Football Freestyle... it's the same thing. Some people prefer to call it football freestyle, others freestyle football. Freestyle is to entertain a crowd with different football tricks, they can be performed from standing position with your legs or upper body, from sitting position or even lying down. There is no inventor of the sport since it has been around for years and years. The first football freestyle moves I have seen is from the 1930's. It was an amazing juggling artists who was doing alot of freestyle moves. One move he did that I have not seen anyone today pull of is to do headers (juggling with your head) with two balls.

Other say that Maradona was the inventor of freestyle as he was always playing around with the ball and doing juggling skills. It's impossible to say who was first with the sport, but I would rather put it this way... People have been doing juggling tricks forever, ever since the ball was invented. Everyone who have been doing tricks are an inventor of football freestyle. For every trick out there the sport got closer to what it is today. And every juggler have given inspiration to another juggler and then there have been new tricks this way.

The term of football freestyle have only been around for a couple of years though. It have not always been a sport, and some people doesn't consider it to be a sport today either. It is a competitive sport which is amazing to watch. To me freestyle is a show and an art, a juggling art. Freestyle can be done by single performers but also in teams of several performers. If there is a choreographer and some talented freestylers they can make an amazing show that will attract a lot of people.

Sum up: Football freestyle is pure juggling from the beginning, but as the time passed it grew into an sport and the sport got the name "football freestyle". Today freestyle is bigger then it ever have been, but it's far from big. Hopefully those amazing ball jugglers will soon go in to a time where freestyle gets big, really big!

Football is a word that is confusing and entertaining and a sport that epitomized the pride of a nation and the strength of an athlete. In other places, football is a game known as soccer in America. Football in America is where the quarterback throws the ball to a receiver and everybody is running is running around the gridiron. And football in Europe and other parts of the world means soccer, where guys run around the field tossing a ball around their knees and head. Whew! That was confusing. So who really invented football?

AMERICA

The "Father of American Football", Walter C. Camp was a football coach and a sports writer and the one who invented football. His name became is legend in the American Football history. He took the rugby game to the next level and invented football. He borrowed term from the rugby game and applied it to football; in rugby, five guys lined-up and are called scrum; in football, he change the five guys to seven guys forming the offensive line, this is called the Line of Scrimmage. Get it? Scrum and scrimmage?

CANADA

Some claims the football is truly a Canadian game and it was a Canadian who invented football. Invented by the replacement for British troops entering Quebec in the 1600's. Canadian Universities then introduced the game to American Colleges. It is said that by the time America first heard of football, Canada already has their professional football league of sorts.

CHINA

Some say that football was invented by Chinese a thousand years ago. The ancient Chinese were said to have kick a ball back and forth for exercise and amusement. It is said that the English only re-invented the sport after explorers visited this far away land. So was it really the Chinese who invented football?

ROMANS

They say it all started in Rome. Romans started playing football quite differently at that time, it is said that they originally toss and throw the pig's head around staking a claim on it. They found it fun and engaging thus it became a sport and thus it was them who invented football.

It was the English who invented the football, or did they? It has been reported that forms of football were played as early as 1200 in England. As evidence, they pointed out a game seen played in ancient Greece, it is believed to be the predecessor of football. But this game is said to be forbade by The King Henry VI and by the 19th century, it was split into two games; the soccer and the rugby. And because American football evolved from the rugby, the English are basically staking a claim on both football sports.

Well, I'm sure you've seen some pros doing some juggling tricks, a.k.a football freestyle. We all saw Maradona back in the days, even if you were not around then you have probably seen videos and heard stories. Back then he was one of a kind with his football juggling skills. He did things od the pitch no one else was able to do. A lot of people have probably seen his warming up video to the music track "Life is life", who have not been amazed by his skills in this video?

Today you see the pros doing some football juggling tricks in the warm up or in TV ads and you may think it's really amazing, let me tell you... it's not. What they are doing are either the most simple trick or it's a freestyler doing the advanced move for them. I am not trying to take the props away from the footballers, they are the best in the world... at football. But when it comes to football freestyle there is a whole new dimension to what juggling tricks are. The impossible is possible these days! But again, when a pro does a trick it's getting really amazing. I've seen great freestylers doing a really good show standing next to pros who are doing really simple stuff... guess who gets the applauses and the attention? the pro!

There are some pros who actually are able to do some of the basic football freestyle tricks, players like Ronaldinho, C. Ronaldo and Edgar Davids for example. Why do they bother? Well, first of it's a great way to entertain people, to be able to do what not every player can do. Also it will improve some of your skills which you will notice during your real football game. The football pros will never be close to the football freestyle pros. A freestyle pro is probably putting as much effort to his freestyle as a football pro does on his football. People mostly think that if you're a good juggler you are a good football player, that's not necessarily true. Many people are good freestylers but don't know how to play football. People need to learn the difference.

Finally I would like to give props to Edgar Davids, I've seen him play street football with local tricks and doing tricks with them, he's a true inspiration for a lot of people out there!

First of all I want to make this clear to you... just because someone is an amazing juggler it doesn't mean that he's good on the pitch(I have meet a lot of football freestylers and in many cases they are also good at football). Also it's the same if you're a good football freestyler, you don't need to be good on the pitch.

If you're a footballer you probably are thinking something like "stupid people spending so much time for something useless". If you are a decent football player and you're serious with your football I believe that football freestyle is a perfect practicing method that will give you extra skills. It will improve your first touch, eye-coordination, ball control and so on. If you think about it, how come all the best players in the world today are familiar with some football freestyle tricks?

As I mentioned before I have played football with a lot of football freestylers and most of them are decent. That's probably because their love for the sport, for some reason maybe they quit football but still want to kick the ball. Also some people just do some basic freestyle to improve their skills on the pitch.

Football Freestyle is only in its early days and it's still very small. If you ask 10 people if they know football freestyle I guess that 8 or 9 will say no, in some cases even all 10 of them. Some people in the world does football freestyle full time, they're not getting rich from it but they still have the opportunity to do what they love. So if you practice hard enough and are dedicated there is a chance for you to become pro.

NFL Football History. A Brief Overview

Who knew back then in the 1920’s that the National Football League would take the path to become what it has? In the 1920’s, a group of businessman and sports enthusiasts from the middle of America gathered in Canton, Ohio in a car showroom to discuss and strategize how they would take pro-football from a disorderly, ruthless game of disgrace to that of an organized league.

It is during this meeting in Canton in the showroom where the men defined rules, traded ideas, elected a board. The new league would be called the American Professional Football Association.

From the wooden, dusty arenas of the midwest including Hammond, Indiana, Akron, Ohio, and Rock Island, Illinois to the Duluth Eskimos in 1926 to Super Bowl 111 where Joe Namath and the AFL’s New York Jets displaced the NFL old guard.

It’s football season and if your like me you have to work or go to school and don’t want to miss a single game of football when your team is playing. It's no secret, the most important day of your fantasy football league is the draft. If you mess this up you basically have very little chance to win. However, if you draft to perfection you'll probably be successful. The big question is weather you draft the player with the best value or the player at the position that you need. Example, you have 4 wr and 1 rb on your team so far. You see a great WR avilable, but in reality he would be no help to your team because odds are you'll only need 3WR so starts. Of course you could get the WR just in case of injury or you could trade the player. Below are my 5 tips to make your team unbeatable.

1) Do not miss the draft. If you do this then the computer will pick for you based on there rankings which means your opponents could predict your picks which is a big disadvantage.

2) You must be active. If you never make trades or pick up players you'll never get any of players that were unexpectedly good. Example after week one you could of picked up willy parker or indianapolis defense who were definitely available. If you were active you could of gotten 2 steals.

3) Look at the scoring system of the league. What position does it favor? Default setting are usually 50 pass yard = 1 point, 20 rush or receiving = 1 points, and touchdowns worth 6 points. This favors running backs and is a disadvantage to quarter backs. However other settings could favor QBs. So this means you don't draft players the same way for every league.

4) Make sure you have a quality bench. If you don't then when you have weeks with a lot of players with bye weeks, then you'll probably loose. If you have a bench to just plug in you'll rack up some important wins.

5) Don't give up. Even if you're in last place after a few weeks, a few wins can get you back in the race. The regular season doesn't really matter. Making the playoffs in last position is basically the same as making the playoffs in first place. A standard league has 10-12 teams with the top 4-6 qualifying for the playoffs

As a football coach and the father of four boys, I think every young man who is able to play football should play football. Even though my sons have many interest, I believe they need to play football in order to learn the lessons that football teaches about life. Such as:

* commitment
* responsibility and
* life isn't fair

"That's not fair!", is one of the most common statements repeated continually by young people today. Well, it's time our young men learned that life isn't fair. You will get knocked down, people will cheat and the call will not always go your way. But, you must get up and get back into the game or lose. If you stay down, you can't win.

Young men need to learn that being the best means preparing, persevering, and practicing whether you want to or not. They need to understand that things will be difficult at times, there will be trials and tribulations. It's all part of life. But quitting is not an option.

Our young men need to regain a sense of responsibility, loyalty and commitment. The most important of these being commitment. Imagine the change in our world, if young men kept their commitments not because a court told them to do it, but because they believed it was the right thing to do.

The structure and discipline of football allows a coach to model, teach and reinforce all of the above traits. But, the coach must make each and every player accountable to the team.

The internet has been responsible for taking fantasy football from a hobby played out in sports bars and individual homes to a multi-billion dollar industry now according to the Fantasy Sports Trade Association. According to the FSTA, nearly twenty million players participate in fantasy sports and the industry has a growth rate of around ten percent. Fantasy Football is the most popular of all the fantasy sports available and continues to grow even faster with the explosion of websites and software to help with the game as well as the proliferation of fantasy football magazines available today.

Most fantasy football leagues will be made up of around ten or twelve individual teams which will have their own mock drafts before the season starts.
